Depression During Pregnancy

As women, once we decide to have a baby, our entire lives change not to mention our bodies and our overall outlook on life. During pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum, we go through tremendous change, psychologically and physically. For the most part, these are happy times but there are possibilities of depression and emotional highs and lows for many.

Hormonal and physical change can make us vulnerable to emotional swings not to mention psychological change, too. Bouts of depression may increase during pregnancy. Much of our mental health during these times depend what the pregnancy means for you, how you handle your body’s physical changes and the state of your support system. Below are five ways to keep your mental state afloat and headed in a positive direction while your world is going through massive change.

1. Discover your new being and what kind of parent you would like to be - Once you come to terms with your new identity as a mom, your positive outlook and your understanding and acceptance of this new role can help resolve depression in pregnancy, yielding a happier postpartum.

2. Rely on family members close to your heart - A good support system is necessary to help you go through the many changes you will endure during pregnancy and postpartum. Strengthen your relationship with your Mom, sister, aunts and other female connections important to you. Female bonding, especially with those that are already mothers will help you maintain a sense of happiness and belonging. The relationship with your husband or significant other is also very crucial (See #4).

3. Discover your needs and take them seriously - Be sure to take care of yourself by seeking support whether it is with housework, career workload, family related issues and/or health issues that come up during pregnancy. Also pay attention to your mental health. If you start to feel uneasy or depressed, don’t be afraid to consult your physician and discuss with him/her the many opportunities to find and connect with support groups with other Moms that are feeling the same way. You will find that you are not alone. Whether it’s fear, lack of knowledge or depression, I guarantee there are other Moms out there feeling the same way.

4. Pull together as a couple - One of the key factors that contribute to depression following birth is marital discord. If you and your significant other are not connected or are going through difficulty, depression can begin or even worsen.

5. Do not delay - As briefly mentioned above, once you start to feel uneasy or depressed in any way, take note and reach out for support. Many women, if not all, go through some sort of soul-searching, depression, uneasiness or anxiousness during pregnancy and after child birth. There are so many support groups, mommy groups, physicians and experts that are very familiar with what you are feeling. Reaching out to those who can help will help put your mind at ease and will help steer you in the direction of happiness and contentment.

Hot Mama to Open First Store in Detroit

Megan Tamte and her husband Michael Tamte opened their first Hot Mama store seven years ago with a focus on designer clothing and unparalleled service. The first store was built-in Edina, Minnesota and today, Hot Mama has 22 stores in eight states. Each year the Tamte’s receive numerous customer requests to add a Hot Mama store in other cities across the United States—which affirms the founding couple’s belief that the U.S. is filled with hot mamas.

The Village of Rochester Hills in Oakland County, MI is proud to say they are next on the Hot Mama list as the newest store will be opening on May 16, 2012. Village of Rochester Hills Invites Moms to Take Advantage of Free Updog Yoga

Updog Yoga and The Village of Rochester Hills has come together for a healthy and fun Mother’s Day opportunity. UPDOG YOGA will be providing FREE Yoga at the Village of Rochester Hills on May 13, 2012. “It is an opportunity for us to provide restoration and a sense of balance to our busy moms of the community” states Duane Utech, owner of Updog Yoga. “We partnered with the Village before and we were able to provide several van-loads of supplies to our charity of choice.”

Updog Yoga’s OM Squad will hit Main St at the Village and provide a beginner yoga class for those interested at 10:00 a.m. and an intermediate Yoga class at 11:00 a.m. The class fee will be a cash donation or a donation of baby needs (diapers, clothes, formula, etc.) for a local charity helping moms and their children.

“We want this to be an opportunity for moms to try something new and celebrate who they are” explained Shelleen McHale, Director of Marketing for the Village and a mom herself. “Mother’s Day should be a day to remember, a day to relax and a day to give ourselves a pat on the back for doing the toughest job in the world. And if we, the Village can help you celebrate and rejuvenate….we are going to do it!”

The class will take place in the store front between GAP Kids and The Children’s Place located right on Village Main. Pre-registration is not needed. Jessica Simpson is finally a Glamorous Mom! Simpson welcomed baby girl Maxwell Drew Johnson into the world Monday, May 1, 2012. Simpson’s precious little darling was born measuring nearly 22 inches long and weighing 9lbs & 13 oz.

It’s the 31-year-old star’s first child and according to Us Weekly, Mama Simpson couldn’t be more proud saying, “Maxwell is so precious and peaceful.”

Volunteers Needed for Habitat for Detroit Women Build

Have you even wondered what it would be like to build a house? Most importantly, have you ever wondered what it would be lke to build a house for a family in need and knowing at the end of the day, you yes YOU have provided a roof over their head? The time has come to make that dream alive. You have the power to change your community and I have the perfect opportunity for you to trade those heels in for a pink hammer and get started.

Habitat Detroit is now looking for female volunteers to help with this year’s Women Build project. Women Build brings together women from all walks of life to address the housing crisis facing millions of women and children worldwide. It is a national initiative of Habitat for Humanity and Women Build weeks that will be occurring all over the country the week of May 5-12, 2012. The Detroit event is especially unique because the Detroit chapter will be hosting a Girls Night Out event for all of the volunteers involved on Friday, May 4, 2012.

The Girls Night Out Women Build Kick Off event will include dinner catered by Slows BBQ and Taste Love Cupcakes in Royal Oak (who was just featured on TLC’s Cupcake Wars), fun DIY ideas, and a panel discussion featuring accomplished metro-Detroit women talking about how they’ve achieved success and how they balance work and life. I will be on the panel that evening and I encourage you all to volunteer and attend. It’s going to be a fantastic time!

The volunteers who call and sign up are all on a first-come first-serve basis. Experience and construction skills are not necessary, many women without experience volunteer for the Women Build sites and still make a great impact. Training and guidence will be provided.

The location for this year’s Habitat Detroit Women Build project will be at the
Morningside Commons Neighborhood on Detroit’s east side starting Saturday, May 5th – Saturday, May 12th. The build times are 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
