 “As an institution, we are best-suited to celebrating the founding of the city of Detroit,” said Bob Bury, CEO of the Detroit Historical Society. “This year, we’re excited to expand our festivities into the tri-county area to unite our region in the celebration.”

What began prior to Detroit’s 300th celebration has spurred a tradition. The Detroit Historical Museum will open its doors yet again for free admission to a special birthday celebration on Sunday, July 24. This year the museum welcomes the public to visit from 1-4 p.m. with activities featuring Kidz Art Zone Crafts, the Pettibone Native American Tribe, and the French Canadian Heritage Society.

 At the museum, located at 5401 Woodward Ave., families can learn their genealogical history with Detroit Historical Society docent Al Trudeau. At 1 p.m. visitors can attend a free screening of Regional Roots: The Birth and Evolution of Detroit and its People, with a presentation by the documentary’s director, Carrie Lezotte. And, no celebration would be complete without cake! Admission and cake while it lasts are both free.

 Detroit’s 310th birthday party extends to the Dossin Great Lakes Museum, located at 100 Strand Drive on Belle Isle, with free cupcakes while they last from noon to 2 p.m. The Dossin welcomes visitors to see its two latest exhibits -To Scale: Great Lakes Model Ship Builders and Bells and Whistles, Flags and Flashes: Lost Languages of the Lakes.

 Then, for the first time, the party will go regional. Organizers at the Detroit Historical Society have reached out to create special events at area shopping malls to bring the celebration close to home for visitors of the museums.

 “We wanted to have an opportunity to invite more people to enjoy the 310th birthday at public venues closer to their neighborhoods,” added Bury.

 The celebration at each mall will include birthday treats, family-friendly activities and in some cases even live entertainment. Detroit Historical Society representatives will be on hand at each location to share information about Detroit history and the museums. The participating malls include:

• Macomb Mall– Saturday, July 23, 2011.  1–4 p.m. The Kohl’s Court will set the scene for a birthday celebration that includes cupcakes, children’s activities and a festive atmosphere. Kids will be encouraged to stop by and try their hand at innovation by designing a flying car. Macomb Mall is at located 32233 Gratiot Ave. Roseville, Mi.
•  Northland Center–Saturday, July 23, 2011.  1-4 p.m. Visitors are welcome to test their knowledge in a Detroit-themed trivia contest. Answer questions to win passes to the Detroit Historical Museum. Northland Center is located at 21500 Northwestern Highway, Southfield, Mi.

In comparison to last year’s show, the beginning had a few quirks which made a few of Gunn’s fans a bit frazzled.  With seats already taken one hour before the show, several ladies scurried around trying to find a place to sit, merely to wait another hour before their favorite TV star hit the stage.  Last year, fans and shoppers were able to call a reservation phone number and reserve seats for the show.  This year, there were less seats surrounding the runway and no reservations were allowed, leaving the open seats available on a first come first serve basis.  In truth, at first, this was hard for some fans to swallow, but once Tim arrived, the ladies began to swoon in the crowd and all things were better once they heard his voice.

Co-host of the hit TV show Project Runway and Chief Creative Officer of Liz Claiborne, Inc., Gunn had no problem giving honest fashion advice as the models walked down the runway.  “The older you are, the dicier the jeggings get”, says Gunn while speaking about grey skinny jeans and jeggings for women of different shapes and sizes.  “Look in the mirror and ask yourself, do I look ridiculous”?  Gunn is not a fan of the trendy jeggings and admits he feels jeggings are better for teens and women in their twenties. He even advised they are more apporpriate for women with taller, thinner frames as opposed to  shorter stockier ones.   Gunn is always known for pointing out the hurtful truth when it comes to fashion, and quite honestly, he’s doing all women a favor by giving blatantly honest advice. And looking in the mirror before we leave the house ladies, will definitely help us recognize our fashion faux pas before our friends do.

Tim Gunn, with his signature eyebrow lift, had no problem commenting on the stunning Kate Spade line.  This leopard print Mercury Bette Dress by Kate Spade is perfect for a special occasion during the day as well as the evening and can be dressed up with colored tights and a great pair of heels.  The Mercury Marsha sequin  skirt is also by Kate Spade. This hot little number can easily be worn with heels or boots, a sweater or blazer and accessorised with an adorable headband or hat.  It’s definitely a versatile piece and  a must have piece for Fall.  Finding signature pieces that you can wear over and over again in different ways to different occasions is the best way to get your money’s worth and still look like a million bucks.

“Pink can become very juvenile, very quickly”, Gunn says.  This Kate Spade pink cardigan is paired with a great pair of well fitted dark denim jeans, a t-shirt underneath for a youthful layered look and a pair of great heels in turquoise. It’s now important to stay away from matchy matchy looks and applying a very youthful color to a sophisticated yet feminine outfit is also key.  This look is great for Moms and ladies alike who want to feel both pretty and stylish at the same time.

Looks from Lucky Brand Jeans consisted of thin layers and mix matched prints. An airy floral print with horizontal stripes is certainly a fun way to express your feminine side.  Although short denim shorts are in this Fall with tights (always wear tights), make sure you look in the mirror and ask yourself if YOU should be wearing them.  Just because the models on the runways are wearing them doesn’t mean the look is right for you.  “We want to empower you with our clothes, you can make them your own”, says Gunn.

Detroit’s own Rhonda Walker, a news anchor for  Local 4, surprised the crowd in a gorgeous red day dress by Kate Spade, tights and leopard print flats.  Stunning as always, Walker looked great on the runway and her Detroit fans were excited to see her sporting such a great color.  As you may already know, Walker has been named the “Best Dressed Female” by Hour Detroit in 2006, 2007, 2008 & 2009.

Both the mirrorball check jacket encrusted with rhinestones and the sateen boyfriend blazer, by Juicy Couture, are worn with a cropped pant and t’s for a fun layered look. Scarves and faux fur stoles are also big this Fall which are two accessories that can be worn beautifully by women of all ages.

 At times, Juicy Couture  has a reputation for being for the younger crowd but not these hot looks.  Whether worn with heels or boots these three dresses by Juicy Couture can be  fun for anyone.  The crinkled chiffon dress is worn with a yellow slip for a touch of color, the cropped faux fur jacket is worn with a neutral color dress, and the black long sleeve mini is paired with a great necklace to make an unforgettable statement. 

Monet Jewelry provided timeless jewelry pieces for the show and handbags from the Kate Spade New York and Juicy Couture Fall lines were also used.  Leaving such an impression on us, we guarantee you’ll be seeing more of the bags here on glamorousmoms.com.

As always, we love it when Tim Gunn comes to town.  Somerset collection was quite a buzz after his arrival.  Some fans who spent the qualifying $150 at Lucky Brand Jeans, Juicy Couture & Kate Spade New York, waited in line for over an hour to meet Gunn, but, “It was all worth it”, said one fan as she walked away with a great photo of herself with her fashionable icon as well as a few fashion tips that will go a long way.

Gunn, author of  ’Gunn’s Golden Rules: Life’s Little Lessons for Making it Work’, has experience in lecturing on fashion and lifestyle design and is an honorary chair of fashion design at Parsons: the New School for Design where he started his career in 1983 as assistant director of admissions and then soon became Associate Dean of the school.

TROY, Mich. – Tapper’s Diamonds & Fine Jewelry is delighted to announce its plans to open the company’s third store later this year, which will be located at Somerset Collection North.  Due to open in early September, the 5,600 square foot Somerset addition will join Tapper’s flagship store in West Bloomfield and its Novi location, located inside Twelve Oaks Mall. 

According to company COO Jeffrey Garden, the Tapper’s workforce will increase by approximately 25% due to the new store opening.

Somerset Collection hosts national debut of Hollywood Brides Unveiled as part of its annual bridal event; London-based, Academy Award-winning costumer COSPROP to display 30 original costumes  
 

      TROY, MI (March 1, 2010) — Somerset Collection, the region’s premier shopping and dining destination, and Academy Award-winning, London-based costume house COSPROP, are hosting Hollywood Brides Unveiled, a first-ever exhibition of 30 original wedding costumes worn by such stars as Kate Winslet (Sense and Sensibility), Gwenyth Paltrow (Emma), Keira Knightly (The Duchess), Amy Irving (Yentyl), Meryl Streep (Out of Africa), Colin Firth (Pride and Prejudice), and Ralph Fiennes (The Duchess). 

      Making its national debut at Somerset Collection, Hollywood Brides Unveiled, part of this year’s annual bridal showcase, runs from Thursday, March 4 through Sunday, March 21.  The exhibit, located in the Somerset Collection North Grand Court, is free to the public and will be open daily during center hours: Monday – Saturday 10 a.m. – 9 p.m. and Sunday from Noon – 6 p.m.

      Culled from the more than 250,000 costumes and accessories in the COSPROP archive spanning more than 250 years, the pieces selected for Hollywood Brides Unveiled — usually exhibited in museums around the world — will allow visitors to get up close and examine the lavish details and exquisite craftsmanship.  As well, docents will be on hand to answer questions about each costume.

      “Many of the costumes have become just as iconic as the stars who’ve worn them,” said Nancy Lawson, North American representative for COSPROP and curator of the exhibit.

      As much as any other production element costumes, in ways subtle or not so subtle, contribute a great deal to the development of characters and the telling of a story.  

      “We may not remember lines verbatim from a movie, but we will recall the star absentmindedly fingering the gem-like glass buttons on her dress like a talisman, or the leading man tying his cravat with a confident flourish,” Ms. Lawson said. 

      She added, “Actors welcome the authenticity of such costumes in preparing for roles.  The formality of period dressing, which can be constrictive due to its intricate cut or corsetry, forces the actor to stand or move differently … and soon they’re walking — figuratively — in their characters’ shoes.”    

Coming down the aisle – and setting up home – in style

      In addition to Hollywood Brides Unveiled, the Somerset Collection Bridal Event will include four live runway shows of bridal fashions and accessories available from Somerset merchants.  The shows, held in the Somerset Collection North Grand Court on Friday, March 12 at 7 p.m.; Saturday, March 13 at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.; and Sunday, March 14 at 2 p.m., are free to the public with first-come seating. 

      Further, on the second floor of Somerset South, guests can explore a world of registry and gift-giving ideas available from the more than 70 Somerset merchants that participate in The Registry at Somerset.  Running in conjunction with Hollywood Brides Unveiled and open during center hours, The Registry at Somerset Bridal Suite is merchandised with traditional registry options – kitchen and bath accessories, for example, and ideas for the couple who have everything – his and hers spa products or sports gear. 

      The Registry at Somerset Bridal Suite will also feature a display of wedding and celebration cakes from The Ritz-Carlton Dearborn, as well as floral arrangements courtesy of Emerald City Designs of Farmington Hills. 

      Finally, each bride-to-be who registers with The Registry at Somerset will receive a hand towel from Scandia Down, a Williams-Sonoma apron and either hand soap or hand lotion from Restoration Hardware; the hand towel and apron may be monogrammed.
